THE NEW MIAMI LUXURY HOTEL VIPS;
Very Important Pups.
I know I am always the first one to criticize and trash Miami, but when it’s doing something nice, I have to set the record straight. And today is that day. So you can mark on the calendar and even make fun of me; I don’t care. Because at last, in this city known for its superficial, tacky, and overpriced dining scene, someone in this fucking industry has finally seen the light. Someone had a revelation.
And it’s a revolution.
I’m fifty-four, and as far as I can remember, it has always been a pain in the ass to find a hotel that accepted dogs. And regarding luxury hotels, it was even more simple; they were barely tolerated. And if you decided anyway to sneak your pup past the front desk, you needed to have quite the criminal mind or find the weirdest ideas to make it happen. You can search it online; I’ve seen hilarious stuff on the internet.
Great news: those days are over. Luxury hotels in Miami have decided to stop treating our beloved companions like pariahs. Even better than that, they are the new V.I.P.s.
At check in, the dog gets a custom memory-foam mattress, a personalized water bowl, and a welcoming smile from a front-desk agent who hasn't smiled at a human being since Covid shut down.
As I said, a goddamn revolution.
Unbelievable, I never thought this day would come. The hospitality industry has found out it has a soul, and honestly, who gives a shit if it was revealed by a Labrador?
But if you think this epiphany is related and motivated by sheer compassion, you’re dreaming. They didn’t grow a heart out of the fucking blue. They just looked at the math. And as goes the saying, “It’s always the economy, stupid,” and in that specific and particular case, it’s the “paw print economy.”
They just realized that dog owners are nuts. I know I am one of them, and I promise you that nothing is good enough for my golden, Rocky.
They finally understood that it was easier to charge a $250 “non-refundable canine fee” and hand over a rubber chew toy shaped like a palm tree than explain to a guest there is an extra charge of $150 for a room upgrade.
The best part is no one is going to throw a hissy fit in the lobby and post a one-star review that might go viral on Instagram. Quite the opposite, those enchanted and grateful guests will order the $45 organic chicken plate from room service and book another night or two. And will spread the word around them at lightning speed.
I’ll say it, it’s fucking brilliant. It’s the greatest corporate heist of the decade, and people are lining up to pay for it.
It’s a goldmine, and some are even more clever; some hotels have now pulled the ultimate trick: they don't charge a nightly pet fee at all. Instead, they get you in by waiving the fee and offering tech-driven luxury amenities for this lovely creature who spends most of its day chewing your shoes and stealing your socks.
In a nutshell, dogs are now considered VIPs and human guests, like the person who just holds the credit card. Mind-fucking-blowing. The fun part is that as it’s just the beginning of this diabolic race, the emulation and competition are forcing properties to out-tech each other.
The InterContinental in Miami has just introduced "Rocco," an AI-powered virtual dog concierge. Guests scan a QR code, and they receive text messages via WhatsApp for directions to the most aesthetic waterfront or walking paths.
Others have autonomous robots who wheel customized pet beds, organic treats, and custom bandanas straight to the room. If this is not flawless five-star service, I don’t know what is. On the other hand, we, downstairs, can’t even get a front-desk agent to look us in the eye.
I’ve seen and read that luxury properties are now designing dedicated interactive splash pads and dog water parks with custom fountains. So in your hotel, if you have a crappy patch of grass. Well, now you know where you can shove it.
Meanwhile, we are packed around an overcrowded pool deck, begging for an hour for an extra towel and arguing with another frustrated soul for the last available lounge chair.
Wait, it’s not over; I save the best for the end. There is my absolute favorite: The St. Regis Bal Harbour Resort and The Betsy Hotel have actual resident dogs who work the lobby and greet guests. It’s the ultimate Miami employment paradox: the humans working at the front desk will barely give you a smile, but the golden retrievers on duty are providing the perfect customer service. They even host a weekly Friday cocktail hour for the new arrivals.
It’s pure genius. I fucking love it. I’m sold.
Finally, I just can’t talk about Miami hospitality without mentioning my best friends. My favorite victims would be more accurate. The most sacred and most annoying species: the self-described, auto-proclaimed digital creator. Understand now that for these entitled, capricious, talentless lifestyle gurus, the dog is no longer just a pet. It’s a strategic investment, a furry accessory designed to revive their hollow personal brand.
Before, they were matching their shoes and their bags to their outfits; now, it needs to match with their Pomeranians, who are occasionally wearing a similar outfit.
If you never have the chance to witness one of those parasites force a tiny, trembling dog to pose by a rooftop pool for forty minutes under scorching heat, just to capture the perfect, candid "lazy Sundays" vibe, your life is not complete. I recommend to you the experience; it’s the fucking treat of a lifetime.
Except for the dog, who looks absolutely miserable, yapping frantically of despair. while the influencer is in total bliss.
Hey, anything for the engagement metrics. Right?
You may argue about the outrageous fees and the influencer circus; you may find it ridiculous. But personally, I am fucking thrilled this is happening. Because objectively, when you think about it, they are the best guests these properties will ever have.
A golden retriever might drool on an Italian marble floor, but at least he won’t blast techno music from a portable Bluetooth speaker at 7 a.m. by the pool.
A Chihuahua might bark at a room service staff member but will never demand to speak to the general manager because the ice cubes are not cold enough.
A dog will never make a reel with a cringey voice in the middle of the hotel lobby.
They don’t vape in the rooms. They don't ask the bartender if the vodka is gluten-free, and let's not forget that a poodle that barks at 3 AM is still far more civilized than the average tourist on Memorial Day weekend.
So that is it; it’s out there in the open now. Hotels have finally discovered the industry’s best-kept secret. The best way to seduce and attract a clientele that is becoming increasingly difficult to win in Miami is to start treating our furry friends like royalty. Who knew?
And if it hurts the competition at the same time… What’s not to like?
You know what? If the purists complain about paws in the lobby, screw them. For sure I won’t participate in this ridiculous chorus. I won’t join those picky snobs whining and lamenting that hotels are losing their prestige. To tell you the truth, I never could stand that uptight luxury crowd; they always bored the shit out of me anyway. So I am over-fucking-whelmed that it’s payback time, baby.
They can complain as much as they want that welcoming dogs means breaking the rules of mainstream hospitality; it was about time we torch the old rulebook. The hell with it.
And to be perfectly honest, I’d rather take an elevator with a slobbering, honest bulldog than with some corporate sales rep spouting safe clichés about leadership and empathy.
Fuck it. Let the fancy treats come, let the dog menus start, and let the dogs be the star of the show. They have much better manners than the humans renting the rooms anyway.
It’s a beautiful irony when you think about it; the only guests left in Miami with any class, elegance, and “savoir-vivre”… have four legs.
How about that!
